Institute Studios is a purpose-built professional venue designed for vocal sessions, choral rehearsals, and recording. With dedicated rehearsal spaces and a newly installed basement recording studio, it provides a high-quality environment for vocal training. Regardless of experience level, lessons at the studio follow a consistent approach to technique and performance, ensuring a fun and engaging learning experience.

The Team

Hughie Gavin

Studio Director & Owner
Hughie is an Emmy-nominated composer, vocal arranger, producer, and musical director. He founded the vocal studio in 2017. Over the last 15 years working with singers, his work has included global campaigns for WWF and Audi, commissions for the 2019 Turner Prize as well as multiple choral collaborations including HBO’s True Detective: Night Country, BBC’s Silent Witness.

From coaching on The Voice UK and Vocal Directing large-scale touring shows and a professional ensemble to running local community and children’s choirs. Hughie works with both professional and non-professional singers from a wide variety of genres. Regardless of the level of experience, lessons at the studio are based on the same approach to technique and performance.

Lo Barnes

Vocal Coach
She has led choirs, taught one on one, and arranged and musically directed professional singing sections. Now focusing on her own project, Lo’s versatile and expressive approach is rooted in high quality performance that allows for intentional creative flow. These sessions are ideal for anyone wanting to tap into the unique sound of your own voice, develop a more focused singing practice or work towards a specific performance

Meg Bird

Vocal Coach
Meg Bird is a passionate singer-songwriter and dedicated music educator with a First-Class Degree from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and currently pursuing a Master’s in Vocal Pedagogy. Combining her performance expertise with a deep understanding of vocal technique, Meg helps students of all levels develop confidence, musicality, and creativity. Her engaging and supportive teaching approach nurtures aspiring singers and songwriters, empowering them to find their unique voice.

How To Book A Vocal Session

If a slot with your preferred vocal coach is not immediately available there is also the option to join the waitlist for a regular weekly or bi-weekly session.

All vocal coaches have a regular schedule but the available session times are posted on social media and sent out by studio manager Harri on a Monday.
